About Crownhill Conservatories
Crownhill Conservatories supply and install quality conservatories and Guardian home extensions in the Plymouth area and across Devon and Cornwall. The company was founded in 2018 by Steve Barnett and Steve Claffey, who took on the company based at Plymouth Garden Centre when the previous owner sadly passed away.
With over 70 years of combined industry experience, the two Steves have installed hundreds of conservatories, each one designed and built to their customer’s specific needs.
In addition, Crownhill Conservatories are a FENSA– registered company, a Certified Guardian Warm Roof Installer, and a member of the Plastics Window Federation as a Trusted Installer. They have also received a Certificate of Excellence in recognition of their excellent workmanship and outstanding customer service.
The challenge
Crownhill Conservatories had been a client of David Smerdon Marketing Services. As he was preparing to retire, he introduced them to us in 2018, ensuring they would continue to receive the same high level of support while benefiting from a fresh approach to their digital marketing.
At the time, Crownhill Conservatories recognised that their existing website no longer reflected the quality of their services or the reputation they were building across Plymouth and the surrounding areas.
They wanted a modern, user-friendly website that would showcase their extensive range of conservatories, while helping them generate more enquiries and support future business growth.
What we did
Working closely with the Crownhill Conservatories team, we designed and developed a bespoke website that highlighted their offerings and incorporated practical features to improve the customer journey.
Launched in December 2018, the site was fully responsive, easy to navigate, and optimised for search engines. Alongside monthly SEO services, the website provided Crownhill Conservatories with a strong online presence for years to come, which helped the company grow.
However, by the end of 2025, the Steves felt it was time to take their digital presence to the next level. So, we held several meetings and agreed that the best route forward to further accelerate their business growth was with a brand new website.
Here’s what happened next.
Step 1: Designing a new bespoke website
The first stage of the project was to create a website that reflected the quality of Crownhill Conservatories’ workmanship while making it as easy as possible for potential customers to find the information they needed. We began by creating a wireframe design, which was carefully reviewed by both sides, tweaked, and approved.
Next, we developed comprehensive service pages covering each conservatory style, explaining their respective benefits, who it was best suited to, and the available options.
To complement these pages, we created dedicated sections covering the wide range of customisation options available, including door styles, frame colours, external finishes, and glazing options.
Extensive FAQ sections were also included throughout the website, answering the questions customers regularly ask during the buying process. This not only improved the user experience but also helped the website perform better in search engines and AI search by targeting a wider range of customer searches.
Beyond the product pages, we developed an engaging About Us page featuring a visual company timeline, which highlighted the key milestones in Crownhill Conservatories’ journey.
Step 2: Incorporating video
With the new website taking shape, we looked at ways of building trust and encouraging more enquiries.
Video was the obvious choice, as it helps visitors connect with a business far more quickly than text alone. What’s more, it gives potential customers confidence in the people behind the company, demonstrates authenticity, and keeps users engaged on the website for longer.
We produced a professional company explainer video for the homepage, which features Steve Barnett discussing the company’s values, commitment to quality, and customer-focused approach. The video also incorporates a customer testimonial, allowing prospective clients to hear first-hand about their experience of working with Crownhill Conservatories.
Step 3: Adding new website integrations
To make the website even more useful for visitors, our developers built a range of interactive tools that allow customers to begin planning their project before getting in touch.
One of the most popular additions has been the Conservatory Quiz, designed to help homeowners discover which conservatory style would best suit their property and lifestyle. By answering a series of straightforward questions, visitors can narrow down their options and feel more confident about their decision.
We also integrated an Instant Quote Tool and a Conservatory Roof Replacement Cost Calculator, allowing customers to receive an estimated price based on their requirements.
To support customers who prefer to do their own research, we added a downloadable PDF brochure, enabling visitors to browse product information, styles, and options at their own pace before arranging a consultation.
Together, these interactive features have significantly enhanced the customer journey, increased engagement, and encouraged more visitors to take the next step.
Step 4: Ongoing local SEO services
Even as the WDSEO team was busy working on the new website, we didn’t forget about SEO.
Since December 2018, we have provided Crownhill Conservatories with ongoing monthly local SEO to increase their visibility across Plymouth, Devon, and Cornwall and generate a consistent flow of enquiries.
The first stage focused on establishing strong online foundations by creating and optimising local business listings and directory profiles.
Once these foundations were in place, we expanded the website with dedicated location pages (also known as geopages), allowing Crownhill Conservatories to target customers across the towns and villages they serve.
Alongside this, we implemented an ongoing content strategy, publishing informative blogs covering conservatory design, planning considerations, maintenance advice, energy efficiency, Guardian warm roofs, and other topics customers regularly search for.
This fresh content has helped attract new visitors, demonstrated the company’s expertise, and created additional opportunities for the website to rank for valuable search terms.
Results in detail
Crownhill Conservatories’ new bespoke website went live at the end of May 2026. During its first full month, it witnessed an impressive rise of 49% in active visitors compared to the last month of the old website.
Some other highlights for the 12 months from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2026, which showcase the strong performance of both their old and their new website, are as follows:
- 1,415 new visitors
- 140 website contact and quote request forms submitted
- 200 calls, emails, and Facebook & WhatsApp messages
- 162 calls from their Google Business Profile
- 65% website engagement rate
