In our second ‘Meet the Team’ interview, we catch up with company founder and Managing Director Diana Crabtree, to learn more about her role, the history of the business, her hobbies and her ambitions for the future of WDSEO!
What’s your role at Web Design and SEO Company?
My title is MD, but my role is to grow the business by ensuring we have the best team (which we definitely do!) and supporting them to deliver the greatest value to our clients and their customers.
How long ago did you start the business?
I started the business on a part-time basis (1 day a week + evenings + weekends!) in 2015. Originally, the business was called Translation Station (I still love the name!). As a Modern Languages graduate many years ago, my brainwave was to provide website translation services to local South West companies in the hospitality sector. I didn’t sell a single one, but everyone I spoke to needed a new website designing and developing! And, WDSEO was born.
What started your passion for web design?
After I graduated, I trained as an Analyst Programmer on IBM AS400s, so I have always had a love of IT. But it was the 5 years or so that I spent working at Goss Interactive that really sparked my interest in and love of user-centred, responsive web design and development.
Which project are you the proudest of working on and why?
I love each and every project. One that really challenged our team in recent months is the new e-commerce website and re-brand for Tamar Caravan Centre (formerly Tamar Towing & Caravans). This was a large, complex project, and my team did not disappoint – I am so proud of them. From the re-brand (including logo, colour scheme, brand guidelines, business stationery, sales materials), to the new e-commerce website, the whole project was amazing – and every member of our team worked on it!
What part of the job do you find the most exciting?
I have to say that I love winning new business! It gives me a real buzz to know that we will be helping another company to make the most of their online presence in order to grow their business.
When we put a website live, the team all has a cheeky drink from our Drinks Fridge to celebrate! Nicola and I tend to go for a Prosecco, John and Jordan like a fruity cider, Jason likes a beer, and Matt is partial to a G&T!!
I also really love working with each member of our team, and seeing them develop and grow their skills, and also develop as a really strong team. What’s not to like?!
If you hadn’t gone into this line of work, what would you have done instead?
I did once think about being a teacher – but as my team will confirm – patience is not one of my virtues! So, I decided against this at an early stage!
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do?
I love to ski (especially the apres ski!), scuba dive (not often to be fair!), and spend time at the beach. I enjoy spending time with my family – walking with our dog, Foxi, baking with my daughter, and I also love reading – especially about SEO!
What is your dream holiday destination?
I am a big kid and ADORE Disney – so that is where I would like us to go as a family, once our daughter is tall enough to enjoy all of the rides!
If you had 3 wishes what would you wish for?
- To see my daughter grow up and be happy
- To travel the world with my family
- To really grow this business even more!
Plymouth’s a pretty interesting place, what’s your favourite thing about where we live?
Well, I love it. I absolutely love being by the sea, and my husband and daughter are massive fans of Dartmoor. We moved here about 10 years ago, and I can’t think of a nicer place to live.
If you could pick 4 dream dinner party guests, who would you pick and why?
Daniel Craig – for obvious reasons!
Gordon Ramsey – he could cook & entertain us!
Peter Kay – he creases me up!
Sandra Bullock – to keep my husband entertained while I talk to Daniel!
Ok, now it’s time for some quick-fire questions!
- Night in or a night out? – Depends on my mood!
- Favourite film of all time? – The new Thomas Crown Affair.
- Any hidden talents? – I speak French & German; I’m “brilliant” at Ten Pin Bowling on the Wii – that’s how I wooed my husband!
- Describe yourself in 3 words – Determined; perfectionist; hard working. My daughter says I must also say “strict”!
If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I would probably go back 20 years, as I wish I had met my husband 10 years earlier. Then, we could have had a football team of children!
Lastly, what do you think the future holds for WDSEO?
Despite the very sad and challenging times, we are all finding ourselves in at the moment, I remain excited and hugely optimistic about the future of our company. We have already grown so much and helped so many companies over the past few years.
I look forward to working with our existing team, supporting them to further enhance their skills and experience, and also to grow the team over time.
We are just about to start redeveloping our own website – long overdue (I can say that – I developed it!) Our new website will give lots more information to both our existing clients and potential clients about our current offering and capabilities, the work we have carried out, our team, and lots more!
As for our other plans – well, watch this space!
And finally, we really look forward to celebrating our 5th Birthday in July!
