Meet the Team – Joe Behan

What is your role at WDSEO?

I am WDSEO’s newest SEO and Digital Marketing Executive. From what I have learned so far, I am responsible for the bulk of my clients online presence! It is something new every day; it is fascinating, and the constant learning and different challenges have been something I have really enjoyed.

How did you get into the role you are doing now?

After School and Sixth Form, I attended the University of Plymouth and studied Marketing BSc with Honours. There, I gained some in-depth academic knowledge of all things marketing and some other elements of business, like economics and accounting. I was at University during the pandemic, which put extra strain on my studies. My course offered the ability to take an optional placement year. I was one of only a handful of people on my course to land a placement year because many companies pulled out at the last minute, which I can only assume was down to extra strains being put on by the pandemic.

In my placement year, I worked for a large Canadian toy company, which was a lot of fun! I then returned to uni and completed my final and most challenging year! During this year, I completed my dissertation project on “how word of mouth and electronic word of mouth are perceived by consumers and what are the key factors to determining success.” After University, I spent a year working as a marketing executive at a large student estate agent company in the centre of Plymouth.

After all that, I thought I had earned some chill time. So I decided to go travelling! My girlfriend and I went interrailing for a few months around Europe. We went to over 20 cities in 10 Countries. I completed my whole WDSEO interview process while we were away. My preliminary meeting was in Munich, my second interview was in Vienna, and my final interview was in Verona, so it was a different interview process!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’m one of those people who really can’t sit still. I like doing something and being productive when I’m not at work. I enjoy cycling, predominantly mountain biking, and have done for many years. While at uni, I chaired the cycling club! I love the outdoors; anything to get out of the house, haha! Another sport I enjoy doing in my spare time is Clay Pigeon Shooting. I have been shooting since I was about 10 with my grandad. I had only been doing sort of entry-level shooting stuff, but since I went to uni and joined the club there, it gave me a chance to build my skills, and from there, I have gone on to compete at competitions across the country for the University. I have also refereed at some shooting events on the odd weekend.

How have you found your time at WDSEO so far?

It has been an absolute whirlwind! I have gained so much knowledge and been part of so many exciting projects already! I really hit the ground running. Our work is genuinely interesting; it’s not just another office job where you go in the morning, work on autopilot until, 5:30, and then go home. It’s stimulating and exciting. Not to mention the team, who have been incredibly welcoming and are there to offer support or anything they can do to ensure you are doing the best you possibly can. Plus, on hot days, Diana brings in ice creams, so you can’t really top that!

What was your first job?

Ah! Well, this links to something I was talking about earlier. It was technically as a tailor at Moss Bros, but I was only there for six months as the opportunity to work at my local bike shop came up! I had previously done a week of work experience there as part of my business course at school, and when the opportunity came up, I was their first port of call! Working at the bike shop was my first foot into my more professional life because even though, to start with, I only worked on Sundays, it meant I got to experience working in a customer-facing environment and talking (selling) to people about something I was genuinely interested in and building that rapport with the customer that it so important.

If you could run your own business, what would it be?

This idea actually came to me while I was travelling in Germany; my girlfriend and I agreed that selling bratwursts is literally a license to print money. I mean, £7/8 for a sausage is unbelievable. That is why my business would be a Bratwurst stand. I’m working along the lines of having a gazebo-esque setup at festivals with the fire in the middle and cooking the sausages on the floating tray, traditional German style. The name is the best part of my plan, ‘The Wurst Stand Here.’ The idea is that people will look and point and go, “oo, that’s a funny name,” and then they come over and spend all their money on our sausages. …. I’m sure it’s a great plan.

What is your dream trip?

I’d love to go to Vietnam and interrail from top to bottom, very similar to the Topgear Vietnam special on the mopeds but with a bit more luxury… however, saying that, I’m not sure there will be that much luxury on Vietnamese trains.
