Meet the Team – Matt Barber

Aug 10, 2021

In our first ‘Meet the Team’ interview, we catch up with Web Developer Matt Barber, to learn more about his role, his favourite projects and his hobbies and interests outside of work.

What’s your role at Web Design and SEO Company?

My role at WDSEO is two-fold; firstly to design and build websites for our clients, ensuring everything both looks and works perfectly, and secondly, I oversee the digital training courses that we run.

How long have you worked here?

I have worked with Diana on a freelance basis for a number of years, and finally took the plunge and joined the WDSEO team fully in May 2019.

What’s your favourite thing about working here?

I love the variety of projects we get to work on – from working on a fine dining website one day to working on a website for luxury yacht experiences the next. There’s plenty of opportunities to be creative and to learn new things, and a great team of people that I get to work with.

What’s been your favourite project that you have worked on so far?

That’s a tricky one as there have been so many great projects! I’d say a website I worked on recently for a packing and packaging solutions company – R. West and Son. I really enjoyed designing the site and got to put in a really cool timeline of their business going back over 100 years. There was a photo album that the client provided with some really old photos, and it was fascinating to look through them and bring them to life on the website.

Did you always want to be a web developer?

Not always, but I did build my very first website over 20 years ago, on a free hosting package you used to be able to get back then called Freeserve! I think it was always something I was interested in.

What was your first job?

At the age of 16, I worked in small local newsagents as a part-time weekend job. I used to get up at 5 am and would run the shop on my own for the morning, which was quite daunting at that age!

If you had any superpower what would it be?

I’d like to be able to teleport. I love travelling and seeing the world, so if I could be somewhere else in an instant that would be pretty cool.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

Long walks or hikes, getting out in the sunshine, exploring new places and travel, writing my first novel, mycology, photography, baking, and fitness.

What was the last movie you went to? What did you think?

The live-action remake of the Lion King – I really enjoyed it for the most part. How can you not be impressed by the awesome visual effects?

What skill would you like to master?

I’d like to be fluent in multiple languages. It would certainly come in handy when travelling the world!

If you could pick 4 dream dinner party guests, who would you pick and why?

David Attenborough – we’d have a lot to discuss as to what was wrong in the world! David Benioff – one of the directors of Game of Thrones – I’d love to find out more about how that show was made. Paul Stamets – an inspiration in the field of mycology. Barack Obama – the US president that I respect the most.

Ok, now it’s time for some quick-fire questions!

  •  Dogs or cats? – 50/50 I can’t choose!
  • Favourite meal? – A nice traditional roast
  • Dream holiday destination? – Vietnam
  • Countryside or the city? – Countryside
  • Glass half full or glass half empty? – Glass half full

What 3 things are on your bucket list?

  1. Publishing my first novel
  2. Travel to every continent in the world
  3. See the Great Wall of China

Lastly, if you were stuck on a desert island, what three items would you want to have with you?

MY DSLR camera, an unlimited amount of chocolate, and a notebook/pen.
