Meet the Team – Claire Thomas

What is your role at Web Design and SEO Company?

I am the Content Executive at WDSEO, a newly created role to support the company’s growth. Since joining the team at the beginning of April 2024, I have hit the ground running and fully immersed myself in my responsibilities. My work involves researching and writing copy for various platforms, including entire websites, blogs, Google Business Posts, and Geopages, all while ensuring the content is SEO-optimised. I have found my role incredibly fulfilling. The diversity of our clients and the friendly atmosphere have made my experience here truly enjoyable.

What did you do before joining the team at WDSEO?

Before joining WDSEO, I studied for a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Literature and Creative Writing at The Open University while working full-time as a restaurant supervisor in the hospitality industry at a 5-star hotel. This certainly kept me busy and was incredibly full-on at times, especially with long and late hours, the high-pressure environment, and keeping on top of my studies. Towards the end of my studies, I felt that I was ready to start a new career. I applied for a Product Copywriter position at an online builder’s merchant. Thankfully, I got the job role, which predominantly involved e-commerce and writing product descriptions for various specialist websites catering to both tradespeople and homeowners.
After a few months in my new role, I successfully completed my degree with First-Class Honours, a personal achievement I’m particularly proud of. My role then evolved into a Consumer Content Writer, where I was tasked with creating a variety of content, including for newly launched websites, help and advice articles, and brand and category pages for products. Unfortunately, in March 2024, my job, along with the entire Content team, was made redundant. However, I saw this as an opportunity for growth and was fortunate to find WDSEO, which I thought was a perfect fit.

What was your very first job?

When I was 15, I worked on Saturdays and through the summer months at a school uniform shop. This involved helping parents and their children find the correct sizes and uniforms for their specific school, taking payments, etc. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the shop shut down. This oddly turned into a bit of a cycle for the places I worked, as the first four job roles where I worked ended up closing for good. (And one school in the middle of my GCSEs!)

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I’m currently a brown belt in Karate and a green belt in Kabudo, which is like Karate but with weapons. I also enjoy the tranquillity of walks on Dartmoor and the adventure of camping. My real passion is live music/gigs, especially festivals. My music taste varies from EDM/DnB to Rock, but my favourite is Heavy Metal. I also love reading (when I have time), watching films/TV series (especially horror), playing games on XBOX, sailing… among other things.

Do you have any pets?

I have a Working Cocker Spaniel dog called Ori, and I love going on long walks with her. I also have a toothless/half-blind Tortoiseshell cat called Tallulah, which I rescued from Cat’s Protection 8 years ago. She’s about 18 years old and likes cuddles, especially on my face when I’m sleeping.

What was the first concert you ever attended?

Paramore at the O2 in London… a fair few moons ago when there were still five of them in the band. I also crowd-surfed for the first time, which was fun.

Tell us something unusual about you that not everyone knows about.

My grandfather was one of the 669 children rescued from Prague in the Second World War and took the train organised by Nicholas Winton, who inspired the film One Life.
